Pike at least out for Louisville

TAMPA - Brian Kelly said that the wrist injury Heisman candidate Tony Pike incurred on Thursday night against South Florida will be evaluated on Friday after being looked at by a specialist.

"The plate that is in there has shifted," Kelly said of the plate put in with six screws after Pike broke his forearm last season. "So we don't know exactly what that means until he gets seen by a specialist (Friday). It may mean surgery. It may not mean surgery. It is really going to be a situation that we will probably have good information (Friday). I would say that right now he is definitely going to be out for Louisville."

Zach Collaros came on to salvage the victory for UC, but Kelly couldn't assure the sophomore would be starting when UC hosts the Cardinals Oct. 24.

It could also be Chazz Anderson, a sophomore from Pickerington who played in three games last season. He threw for 528 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in wins against Marshall and Rutgers and a 40-16 loss to Connecticut.

"I am not prepared to make that (call)," Kelly said. "I will have to take a look at some things. They are both viable; we can win Big East games with both of those guys."

Pike dropped back to pass on the second to last play of the first half and landed awkwardly on his left wrist while being called for intentional grounding.

He went to the locker room soon after and had x-rays taken. Pike attempted to come out and play on the first series of the second half with a protective pad on his wrist, but after being knocked to the ground on third down he walked off the field favoring the wrist.

Ice was then applied and Pike's night was done.

Pike is among the statistical leaders nationally in nearly every major passing category. On the year he was 116-of-174 for 1,493 yards with 13 touchdowns to three interceptions. He has thrown a touchdown pass in 16 consecutive games and entered Thursday leading the Big East in passing yards per game (306.8).

On Thursday he was 12-of-25 for 140 yards and two touchdown passes.

Coincidentally, it was against South Florida last season where Pike excelled in the road to recovery from the forearm he broke early in the year.

That game he fought through the pain to throw for 281 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-10 win.

So, the quarterback carousel continues at UC where last year Dustin Grutza broke his right leg the second game of the season, then Pike broke his forearm two games later.

"I don't want to bore you with the details but I have been down this road before," Kelly said. "We have some things that we are prepared for in a worst case scenario."
