Spring Training 2010

Live: Reds v. Brewers 3.11.10

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Well, winter left, today's spring and tomorrow summer's supposed to start, so we've got that going for us.

Here's your lineups:

Brewers
Jody Gerut lf
Joe Inglett 2b
Corey Hart rf
Jim Edmonds cf
Casey McGehee 3b
Steffan Wilson 1b
Matt Treanor c
Luis Cruz ss
Chris Narveson p

Reds
Chris Dickerson cf
Orlando Cabrera
Joey Votto 1b
Scott Rolen 3b
Jonny Gomes lf
Wladimir Balentien rf
Chris Valaika 2b
Ryan Hanigan c
Laynce Nix DH

pitchers
Johnny Cueto
Nick Masset
Daniel Ray Herrera
Pedro Viola
Jared Burton
Philippe Valiquette
Jordan Smith
Logan Ondrusek
Enerio Del Rosario

* Top 1: It's 63 degrees and awesome out. 3-1 to start the game for Cueto. A lineout and then a nice play by Valaika to get a ball in shallow center. Didn't look like Dickerson could see it in the sun, and Valaika went out deep to get it. Redlegs 0, Brewlegs 0

* Bottom 1:
Have I mentioned how much I hate "Everybody Clap Your Hands." It's annoying and it's not a Mets thing. Which explains why it's annoying. That song should've died with Shea.

A walk to Cabrera.

Anyway, how about this? Hudy is having commemorative cans to celebrate the Reds Hall of Fame class.

Votto grounds into a double play. Redlegs 0, Brewlegs 0

* Top 2:
Jim Edmonds singles to left -- and dives into first base, just to make it look good. With one out, Cueto walks Wilson, bringing up Mr. Misty May. He pops up to first, it's an infield fly -- Votto lost it in the sun and didn't catch it, but it doesn't matter because of infield fly. Then another popup on the outfield grass, but Cabrera has no trouble. Redlegs 0, Brewlegs 0

* Bottom 2:
Wladimir Balentien's double is the first hit for the Reds, but Chris Valaika strikes out looking to end the inning. Redlegs 0, Brewlegs 0

* Top 3:
After a 4-3, we get the rare 1U -- Cueto runs to get Gerut's grounder and just keeps running to tag first. Hal started singing Inglett's name to the begining of the "Lion Sleeps Tonight" -- and it oddly fit.  Cueto gets him swinging. Redlegs 0, Brewlegs 0

* Bottom 3
: That's it for Cueto. 3 innings, 1 hit.

* Bottom 5:
Cueto, understandably, felt good about his outing. He threw his fastball, change and slider, didn't throw his curve. He said he was working hard on his mechanics and felt good about what he did. 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 BB. And then I went and talked to some fans, who were loving it out here. Oddly enough, I was asked about pizza places. I had that figured out. Two-out walk to Nix and then Dickerson crushes one to right-center and it's a standup triple. 1-0. Redlegs 1, Brewlegs 0

* Top 6:
Francisco in at third, Miller behind the plate and Burton pitching. Single by Gerut on a 3-2 count. Lorenzo Cain in to run and he steals second. Sac E1 for Inglett, Burton's throw was in the dirt. A double play scores the run. Edmonds singles and is replaced by Kentrail Davis. Davis is caught stealing. Burton actually gave Miller a chance. Redlegs 1, Brewlegs 1

* Bottom 6:
Votto's shot is a no-doubter. 2-1. It's his first hit of the spring. Redlegs 2, Brewlegs 1

* Top 7:
Enerio Del Rosario pitching, Yonder Alonso in at first, Miguel Cairo at short, Sutton in left, Anderson in center and Heisey in right. A one-out walk and then a single by Mr. May. Runner to third. A jam job to second for the second out. And a groundout to ALonso to get out of the inning. Redlegs 2, Brewlegs 1

* Bottom 7:
Third damn time they've played the stupid "Everybody Clap Your Hands" ditty. Frazier with a double to center. Wild pitch to Anderson, Miller moves to second. The ball went into the dugout or Miller likely would've made it to third. Redlegs 3, Brewlegs 1

* Top 8:
Pedro Viola in for the Reds. He has that fall-away motion kinda reminds me of a left-handed Cueto where his back legs follows through. Eric Farris doubles for the Brewers, bringing up Trent Oeltjen. Wild pitch moves Farris to third. Walk to Oeltjen. Davis goes down looking. Viola then walks Lucroy to load them. Then a first pitch groundout by Wilson to get out of the inning. Redlegs 3, Brewlegs 1

* Bottom 8:
Nothing like a spring training press box to talk about favorites from the Larry Sanders Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Somehow, this all started from a discussion about Police Academy. Did you know they're planning a Police Academy 8? I might be more excited for that than I am Hot Tub Time Machine, and that's saying something. A single by Francisco and walk to Sutton, plus passed balls and then a walk to Heisey loads 'em up for Frazier. Fielder's choice, 5-2. And a fourth "Everybody Clap Your Hands." Christ. And Corky MIller looks at strike 3. Redlegs 3, Brewlegs 1

* Top 9:
And we've got Logan Ondrusek to close it out and I'm headed downstairs.

Final:
Redlegs 3, Brewlegs 1

    I will refrain from "clapping my hands" over your reporting of the game but it was concise and informative.
