Cincinnati Reds
Taveras, Rosales to A's

The Willy Taveras era in Cincinnati is over.Aaron MilesThe Reds traded Taveras and infielder Adam Rosales to Oakland for infielder Aaron MIles and a player to be named, the team announced on Monday, making room on the 40-man roster for shortstop Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera agreed to a contract late Saturday. That deal was also announced on Monday, with the two sides agreeing to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2011.
Taveras was due $4 miilion this season as part of a two-year deal he signed as a free agent before the 2009 season. Taveras was a huge disappointment for the Reds who had hoped he could be their leadoff man, but he hit just .240/.275/.285 last season in 102 games.
Rosales played in 87 games, hitting .213/.303/.317, playing each fo the four infield positions.
Aaron MilesAs big a disappointment as Taveras was, Miles may have been even worse for the Cubs. Miles, 33, hit .185//224./.242 in 74 games with the Cubs after hitting .317/.355/.398 in 2008 with the Cardinals. Miles has played every position but first base and catcher during his career in the big leagues.
"I'm happy to be reunited with Aaron, who played a key role in our World Series championship in St. Louis," Jockett said in a statement. "He's a quality infielder, a quality person and will be an asset to our club."
Miles was due $2.7 million for 2010, with the Cubs giving the A's $1 million for his contract as part of a trade that brought Miles to Oakland in December.

Just awesome news. What a way to start the new month.

I am sad to see Rosales go. The Reds are fooling themselves if they think Rolen is going to play 140 games this year. As a player, contracts aside, I would much rather have Rosales than Miles. Sure, the combination of 1.7M and the prospect of not seeing Taveras leading off and moping in the dugout is great, but I can't say this trade makes me feel elated.

I liked Rosales for his intensity but that's it. He was at best a Triple A player. He wasn't competant enough at the plate to be an off the bench guy in my opinion.

Well the A's obviously think differently. That said Miles, Frazier, Francisco, Sutton and Rolen all play 3B.

Crap. I was hoping that Miles' role was basically going to be as an easier-to-cut version of Taveras, but sounds like Jocketty actually has plans for him. Please please please let's try Francisco/Frazier in the backup infield roles instead.

ok, i plea ignorance
can somebody explain why the a's would trade for taveras then immediately release him? the convoluted baseball labor agreement has me stumped.

I think the A's were just trading for a slightly worse contract just to get Rosales. By cutting Taveras, they are basically paying $1.3 (not counting Rosales' salary) for Rosales and a roster spot (previously held by Miles).
