The Reds and third baseman Scott Rolen reached an agreement on a contract extension through 2012 that also restructured his current contract, giving the team some salary relief.According to the Associated Press, Rolen's $11 million salary due for next season will instead be $6 million, with a $5 million signing bonus to be paid over the next three years. He will make $6.5 million in 2011 and 2012.
"Scott's signing is an indication of his feelings toward the club and the direction we're taking," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement released by the team. "He wants to stay here and hopefully he can end his career as a Red."
Rolen, 34, was acquired at the trade deadline from the Blue Jays, along with cash, for Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart. Rolen hit .270/.360/.401 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 40 games for the Reds. Overall in 2009, he hit .305/.368/.455 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs in 128 total games for the Reds and Blue Jays.
