Reds limp back home
By Staff Report, CNATI.com Posted April 18, 2010 3:44 PM ET
The good news is the Reds can't lose on Monday. In the midst of a five-game losing streak and fresh off a sweep in Pittsburgh, the has an off day on Monday. The team's bats and starting pitching have had nearly an off-week, as the Reds have hit just .188 since winning the first two road games of the season and the still-winless starters have a 7.91 in a full turn through the rotation.
A bullpen that has seen its share of action allowed two walk-off wins for the Pirates in the first two games of the series, including Francisco Cordero's first blown save of the season on Saturday, but was spared that opportunity on Sunday, as the Reds fell 5-3 to the Pirates, with Bronson Arroyo getting his first loss of the season.
Reds starters are 0-4 on the season, and rookie Mike Leake is the only Reds starter without a loss. Leake's 2.63 ERA is the best in the Reds rotation. Leake will start Thurday opposite the Dodgers' Vicente Padilla.
Leake's been the only starter on the road trip to complete seven innings, forcing the bullpen to throw 14 innings during the streak. Reds relievers have a 3.21 ERA during that stretch.
Leak's also the team's leading hitter with a .600 average (3-for-5), whcih tells you the offense has been as bad or worse than the startering pitching. None of the team's regulars are hitting better than .300 -- only Paul Janish (.300), Ryan Hanigan (.333) and Homer Bailey (.333) are hitting better than .300 and none of them have more than 18 at-bats.
The team's .226 average and .293 on-base percentage rank next-to-last in the National League, ahead of only the 3-9 Houston Astros.
