Once again, the Reds will not go to arbitration this year, avoiding the process on Monday when it reached a one-year deal with its lone remaining arbitration-eligible player, right-handed reliever Jared Burton. The team reached a two-year deal with its other arbitration-eligible player, Nick Masset, this weekend. The Reds haven't gone to arbitration since 2004.
"Jared has done a great job in our bullpen the last few seasons and we're counting on him again in 2010," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement released by the team. "We're glad to have signed Burton and Nick Masset before going to arbitration. Neither side wanted to go to a hearing."
The team and Burton were scheduled to submit salary arbitration figures on Tuesday.
Burton was 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA in 53 appearances last season. He had a 2.35 ERA in 22 appearances after coming off the disabled list with a "fatigued right shoulder", including a 1.20 ERA in his last 15 games.
The Reds have not gone to arbitration since beating Chris Reitsma in 2004. The team has settled its last six cases, settling with David Weathers and Edwin Encarnacion before the 2009 season. Both of those players were traded during the season.
