Two days after Mike Leake took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a day after Bronson Arroyo allowed just three hits in his first seven innings, Reds starter Johnny Cueto outdid both of them, throwing a one-hit shutout against the PIrates on Tuesday to give the Reds a 9-0 victory. It was the first one-hitter by a Reds starter since John Smiley on Sept. 22, 1996.
Cueto threw just 105 pitches, walking none and striking out eight in his first career complete game.
"He had an electric fastball tonight, he was throwing it in and out, up and down, and he'd get behind and come in there with a fastball, he and Ramon were on the same page. He minimized his pitches, that's the big thing," Baker told reporters after the game. "He's sometimes had 105 through fifth... That's minimizing your pitches and maximizing your results right there."
The only hit Cueto gave up was a single in the third by Ronny Cedeno.
"I've been working on getting ahead, working the strike zone and getting ahead in counts and get quick outs," Cueto told reporters through interpreter Ramon Hernandez.
The Reds are in line for a sweep of the Pirates after being swept in Pittsburgh last month.
Rookie Chris Heisey, in his second start, collected his first big league hit with a leadoff single in the first and then homered in the eighth inning.
"I wouldn't say I was pressing, but I was definitely waiting for that first hit," Heisey, a Pennsylvania native, told FS Ohio's Jim Day after the game. "Just to get it out of the way relaxed me a little bit and let me just play the game."
