Reds notch another extra-inning W

For the second night in a row, the Reds used a liner just over a leaping infielder to score the go-ahead run in extra innings.

On Monday, it was Scott Rolen with the heroics, on Tuesday it was Joey Votto's 11th-inning single over Hanley Ramirez scored pinch runner Chris Dickerson to lead the Reds to a 10-8 victory over Florida.

Brandon Phillips followed Votto's single with one of his own to drive in an insurance run. Phillips came into the game hitting .183 and recorded four hits and two RBIs, raising his average to .273.

"We're the type of team that's not going to give up," Phillips told FSOhio's Jim Day on the postgame show. "We have a lot of guys who push each other through ups and downs, that's the name of the game. Right now we're just trying to go out there and get wins however and it doesn't matter, as long as we win the game."

Micah Owings picked up the victory after entering the game in the ninth and pitching two scoreless innings. So far this season, the Reds' longman  has gone five innings this season, allowed two hits, struck out five and hasn't allowed a run or walked a batter.

Bronson Arroyo struggled, but was in position to pick up the first victory of the year for a Reds starter, but rookie Logan Ondrusek gave up a hit to Hanley Ramirez to start the eighth, then after two strikeouts walked Ronny Paulino on four pitches before surrendering a home run to Cody Ross to tie the game.

Ondrusek gave up back-to-back singles after the game-tying homer, and gave way to Daniel Ray Herrera, who walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. However, he struck out Cameron Maybin to end the inning.

Arroyo allowed six hits and five runs in six innings, but after throwing 102 pitches, could go longer to help an already taxed Reds bullpen.

The Reds' usual eighth-inning pitcher, Nick Masset, had been used in each of the last three games and was unavailable for Tuesday's game, leaving the rookie to try to get the game to closer Francisco Cordero.

Cordero picked up his fourth save of the season, pitching a perfect bottom of the 11th. It was his third outing in three days and will likely be unavailable on Wednesday.

Jonny Gomes and Ryan Hanigan each had three-run homers to give the Reds an early lead, before Arroyo allowed four runs in the fourth. Gomes also drove in a run in the eighth, giving him four on the night.
