Notes: Mantha succeeding in limited role

Freshman forward Devin Mantha earned points in consecutive games for the first time in his Miami career over the weekend.

Mantha, who had not played since a home game on Nov. 14 (coincidentally also against Ferris State), notched one assist in each game against the Bulldogs Friday and Saturday.

Mantha is the son of former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman and U.S. Olympian Moe Mantha, who also coached the AHL Cincinnati Mighty Ducks among other teams.

Mantha has played in just four games this season and has logged limited ice time when he has cracked the lineup, but he has a goal and two assists. His lone goal was against St. Cloud on Oct. 10, the second game of the season.

WINGELS' POINTS STREAK ENDS, NEW ONE STARTS: Junior forward Tommy Wingels had the longest points streak by a Miamian this season at seven games entering last weekend, but he was kept off the scoresheet on Friday.

However, Wingels scored twice and added and assist on Saturday, his third game with three or more points this season. In his last nine games, Wingels has eight goals and six assists for 14 points.

CAMPER'S WORLD: Junior center Carter Camper also recorded three points on Saturday, dishing for three assists. It was Camper's second game with three or more points in a game this season.

Number of three-plus-point games by Miamians this season:

Tommy Wingels 3
Jarod Palmer 2
Carter Camper 2
Reilly Smith 1
Cameron Schilling 1
Curtis McKenzie 1
Pat Cannone 1

SACRED REICHARD: Reichard tied the Miami record for shutouts in a season on Friday by recording his fourth. He matched David Burleigh's mark set in 2002-03, and Reichard has six career shutouts, six shy of Burleigh's all-time career record of 12.

Reichard's ability to bounce back from a his mercurial starts this season has been amazing. Reichard has given up three or more goals five times this season, but in the game following such an outing this season his goals-against average is 0.29 and his save percentage is .988.

Reichard allowed four goals in the finale vs. Ferris State on Saturday, meaning Friday he will put those numbers to the test.

HIRSCHFELD STOCK RISING: Sophomore forward Alden Hirschfeld scored a goal on Saturday, giving him more points already this season than in 2008-09.

Hirschfeld finished last season with six points (5-1-6), but this year he now has three goals and four assists for seven points.

Hirschfeld's goal snapped a 16 game scoreless streak. His last goal was on Oct. 30 at Northern Michigan.

MAJOR PROBLEM: Miami had just one major penalty in its first 22 games, but the RedHawks took a pair over the weekend. Hirschfeld was assessed a major and a 10-minute game misconduct for hitting from behind on Friday, and junior center Andy Miele picked one up on Saturday for kicking.

Miele's major was also accompanied by a disqualification penalty, meaning he received an additional 10 penalty minutes toward his total and he will be suspended for Friday's game at Alaska.

PALMER IN THE CLUTCH: Senior forward Jarod Palmer has nine goals this season, and four have been game winners. He recorded his fourth GWG on Friday, when his tally at 7:02 of the first period put Miami ahead, 1-0. It was all the help Reichard needed.

His ninth game-winning goal moved Palmer into the top 10 all-time among Miamians. He is currently tied for seventh with Gregor Krajnc, Brian Savage and Mike Kompon.

Wingels, who had the game winner on Saturday, has five GWGs this season and eight for his career.

100-POINT CLUB UPDATE: Palmer had four points this weekend, moving him into a three-way tie for 30th all-time in Miami scoring with 114 points.

Palmer, who moved past John Malloy, Pete Shipman and Rob Vanderydt, is currently tied with former RedHawks Andy Cozzi and Andy Greene. He entered the weekend in 36th place with 110 points.

Camper moved up four spots from 42nd place to a tie for 38th with his three assists on Saturday. Camper hurdled Greg Dornbach, Randy Robitaille, Craig Fisher and Brian Savage.

Wingels pulled with 19 points of the 100 mark with his three-point weekend. Wingels has 38 goals and 43 assists, and he pulled ahead of junior center Pat Cannone (23-57-80), who had one assist vs. Ferris State.

Both are on pace to eclipse triple-figures early next season, although Wingels has 14 points in nine games, and he could reach 100 this season if he continues to rack up points at his present rate.
