Boyle scores 100th NHL goal

San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle became the second Miamian in history and the first RedHawks blueliner to score 100 goals in the NHL when he netted a power play tally in Phoenix on Dec. 31.

Boyle took a feed from forward Ryan Clowe down low at 5:29 of the third period of that game, beating Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov through the five hole. That goal tied the score, 2-2, and the Sharks eventually won, 3-2 in a shootout.

Also, Boyle was selected to play for Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics. Boyle was a reserve in the 2006 games in Torino, Italy, but never got into a game.

He did represent Canada in the 2005 World Championships en route to earning a silver medal.

NHL: New Jersey Devils defenseman Andy Greene was omitted from the Team USA Olympic roster, but he recorded two more assists to give him 23 points on the season.

In three previous NHL seasons, Greene's career high in points was 10.

AHL: Although forward Justin Mercier was sent back down to Lake Erie after three games with the Colorado Avalanche, that trip to the NHL apparently rejuvenated Mercier's scoring touch.

Mercier had no goals and one assist in his first 27 games with Lake Erie, then received his initial call-up to the parent team, where he was kept off the scoresheet all three games.

But upon his return to Lake Erie, he scored four goals and added a pair of assists during a five-game stretch.

Mercier netted two goals at Hamilton on Jan. 2, and scored two more and dished for an assist on Jan. 3 in Grand Rapids.

ECHL: Forward Ernie Hartlieb picked up four more assists in his last five games for Florida.

Hartlieb is currently playing his sixth season for the Everblades, where he has amassed 79 goals and 160 assists.

CHL: Goaltender Charlie Effinger picked up two wins in a pair of decisions for Allen, and earned his second pro shutout.

Effinger beat Texas, 3-2 on Dec. 26, and shut out Wichita, 3-0 on Dec. 31. In two previous seasons in the ECHl, Effinger had never earned a shutout.

Europe: Forward Marty Guerin continues to dominate with Pontebba.

Guerin currently has a four-game goal streak - netting five in that span - and he had a five-point game vs. Valpellice on Dec. 28 (one goal, four assists).

Also, Lugano forward Randy Robitaille recorded a goal and seven assists in his last five games, giving him 52 points on the season. Robitaille had not posted a 50-goal season since 2004-05, when he played with Zurich - also of the Swiss-A league.
