GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Welcome to lovely Goodyear.

Some of the guys were not that excited about wearing gray pants today. Today's a split squad with some of the team staying here and another group headed to Phoenix to face the A's.

I'm going to stay here. Dusty's staying here, while Chris Speier is headed to Phoenix to serve as manager -- and third base coach -- against the A's. Eric Davis will be the first base coach in Phoenix and Ellis Burks will be the hitting coach.

So, with that, here are your lineups:

Reds at A's in Phoenix
Chris Dickerson 8
Paul Janish 6
Jay Bruce 9
Jonny Gomes 7
Juan Francisco 5
Wladimir Balentien DH
Ramon Hernandez 2
Todd Frazier 3
Miguel Cairo 4

Johnny Cueto p (5 innings)
Jared Burton (2 innings)
Mike Lincoln (2 innings)

Home vs. Cubs
Drew Stubbs 8
Orlando Cabrera 6
Joey Votto 3
Brandon Phillips 4
Scott Rolen 5
Laynce Nix 9
Chris Heisey 7
Corky Miller 2
Justin Lehr 1

pitching
Lehr (3 innings)
Arthur Rhodes (1)
Francisco Cordero (2)
Kip Wells (3)

And for the rest of your pitching schedule for the week
Monday
Arroyo (5 innings)
Chapman (4)
Masset (2 innings in minor league game)
Herrera (1 inning in minor league game)
Owings (4 innings in minor league game)

Tuesday
off

Wednesday
Bailey (5)
Burton (1)
Cordero (1)
Herrera (1)
Rhodes (1)
Lincoln (2 in minor league game)

Thursday
Harang (6)
Masset (1)
Maloney (2)

Friday
Leake (4)
Wood (4)
Wells (1)

* March Madness hit Tempe yesterday, not the men, but the women. Scott is a senior writer for CNati, a part-time marketing associate and a sleep-deprived father of a very energetic 1-year-old.

The 11 months since I got laid off from The Columbus Dispatch have been frustrating, humbling, even humiliating at times. Then there are days like yesterday. Days that can energize a person for a week.

I took my son to the zoo for a few hours. Got home in time to catch the end of BYU-Florida, which was only the beginning of a great day of basketball. Met my wife and some of her family for dinner at Price Hill Chili. Then watched more basketball, with my wife and son.

Sometimes it is nice being semi-employed.

* Was that the best opening day ever?

How 'bout the Bobcats? From the No.9 seed in the MAC tournament to the second round of the NCAA tournament. I'm sure OU grad Paul Dehner, CNati's resident hoops head, will have more on his blog later today.

* It is too late now for them to help you fill out an office bracket, but there are a couple local sources for some interesting analysis of the NCAA tournament: Prediction Machine and What If Sports each simulated the tournament thousands of times and came up with Kansas beating Baylor in the championship game.

If you are so inclined, Paul Bessire of Prediction Machine offers in-depth analysis of every game. It is quite a tool for the serious, um, fan.

You will find more whimsy at What if Sports, more games. The company is run by an Elder grad, so you know it's good.

* Had a nice little trip to Columbus last weekend for some sweet-crust pizza and a Blue Jackets game. It was a reminder of how important Rick Nash is to that team (without him, they had only one line that was even worth watching) and how nice that arena is (with or without a decent team on the ice).

ESPN once ranked Nationwide Arena No.1 in "stadium experience" among all the venues of all the major pro sports franchises. It is definitely my favorite pro sports venue in Ohio: more character than Paul Brown Stadium or Cleveland Browns Stadium, classier than the gaudy Great American Ball Park, newer and cleaner than Jacobs Field, bigger than the minor-league parks without being too big.

I'll even put it my top 10 venues at any level. In no particular order: Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium (the previous one), Safeco Field, PNC Park, The Pit, Yost Arena, Nationwide Arena, Ohio Stadium, Lambeau Field.

I have not yet been to Augusta National or Daytona. Haven't been to a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium or a race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hopefully someday.

What about you? Any favorites not on my list?

* In case you missed it: sweet-crust pizza. It is worth a drive to Columbus.

* Ohio State fired hockey coach John Markell this week. I am not surprised: The athletic department spends a lot of money on the non-revenue sports, and the expectation is to contend for national titles in everything.

That approach is paying off in wrestling, just a few years after OSU fired an accomplished, popular and classy coach in Russ Hellickson.

I had the pleasure of dealing with Russ and John, and I learned a lot about their respective sports because they were patient with me. I wish them the best.

I understand the athletic department's stance: The pursuit of excellence is generally a virtue, and considering what the department is spending, it is not unreasonable to expect tangible success. On the other hand, there should be a place in sports -- even major-college sports -- for guys like Russ Hellickson, who genuinely love the sport and the kids they teach. I suppose the best we can hope for is a balance: to pursue excellence without selling souls.

Which is why my opinion of Jim Tressel is changing. For years I was convinced there is dirt behind his too-polished image. Nobody is as golly-gee-clean as he projects, and he speaks like a politician. But apparently his players, assistant coaches and staff members -- including former players, assistant coaches and staff members -- speak very highly of him, which means something.

* I could only chuckle when I saw this. Cliff Lee has rubbed a few people wrong over the years with his stubborn, cocky competitiveness, so I wasn't surprised to see him throw at an opponent in an exhibition game.

I never like seeing a pitch at a guy's head, but I also would not ask Cliff to change his approach. The attitude generally serves him well on the mound.

He might want to find some backup, though. Maybe a guy like Jonny Gomes.

* Count me among those who think Brady Quinn will do well in Denver. Maybe I just want to see Browns fans suffer a little more. Maybe I'm biased because I was a Notre Dame fan as a kid. Just seems a little short-sighted for an organization that is woefully short on offensive talent to give up on a high-profile quarterback after 12 starts.

* If you are in the Chicago area and appreciate live theater, check out Ragtime at Drury Lane in Oak Brook. It is the equity-theater debut of Cincinnati native Genevieve Perrino, a talented singer and dancer who happens to be my sister-in-law. Break a leg, Genny!

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Don't forget, you can watch the Reds game on FS Ohio today.

There's also going to be some cuts (or, more accurately, reassignments) today, Dusty Baker said there'd be 11. Some before the game and some after.

So, here's your lineup

Dickerson 8
Cozart 6
Votto 3
Rolen 5
Gomes 7
Balentien 9
Hernandez 2
Burke 4
Valaika DH

pitching
Bailey (4 innings)
Cordero (1)
LeCure (2)
Viola (1)
Del Rosario (1)

with backups Ondrusek and Valiquette

Those names, especially on the pitching side where innings are tough to come by, should give you a clue of what's to come.

"I've got to send some guys out, it's not a pleasant day," Dusty Baker said. "I don't care how many times you do it, it's not pleasant. There's no easy way to do it. So many guys know they're probably going to go."

Baker said it's a tough day for him when he has to make these cuts.

"Especially when you recall when you were there, I don't know many who haven't been there," Baker said. "Everyone's busted their tails this spring. It's been a great camp. We've got some fine young men here of high character and people tell us that everywhere we go. It makes you feel proud as a manager and the organization should be proud."

Baker said he remembers his first time being cut, it wasn't a surprise, so it didn't hurt too bad.

"The tough one is when you're the last day cut, that's the one I remember," Baker said. "I remember when they told me to ship my car north because I made the team at 8 a.m. and then at 4 p.m., my car was gone and I was off the team, they'd changed their minds. THat was tough."

* More Aroldis Chapman stuff: On when he was signed. "My reaction was I was pleasantly surprised and I didn't know what I was surprised about."

As for after he's seen him, "It couldnt do anything but increase. But it's increased even more because the more you get to see him, one inning here, two and now three, you've hear he gets stronger as the game goes on. We've still got a lot to find out. What's his maximum workload and capacity. Or do you rescue him when he's in trouble, after he walks two or three, do you go get him, or is he a guy that can walk bases loaded like J.R. Richard used to do and then strike them out. There's still a lot to learn about him."

* If you've got Chapmania, have we got the shirt for you.

* Dusty said he's heard from several other managers, coaches and scouts that the Reds have a good team.

"Every day," Baker said.

Is it gratifying? "Not yet. It'll be gratifying when you do it and when (the players) believe it. ... I hear it every day. They see our 25 -- and that's what you have to look at, because a lot of the guys that are in the games won't be there initially to help us. I play everybody. I did that. If they go, I try to play them until we get down to the cut point and we'll go from here."

It's better than hearing "your team stinks."

"I've heard it, too," Baker said. "(Not this year) and not last year, either. But I've heard that, 'what kind of team are you running out there?' I'm not lying. Or, 'how did you beat us today with that team?' I don't want to hear that shit."

* On Juan Francisco, Baker said he'll play some first, too, in addition to third and left.

On his spring, "It's been either tremendous or not very much... kind of all or nothing, it depends on if he's swinging at strikes or not. That's how I see it. I don't want to take away his aggressiveness, but he's got to work on his plate discipline. The word's going to get out and they'll start throwing it around his head. What makes it worse is that he can hit some of those."

* UPDATE: The first set of moves have been made: "Prior to today's game the Reds optioned to Louisville IF Yonder Alonso and LHP Bill Bray; optioned to Carolina RHP Jordan Smith and LHP Philippe Valiquette; assigned to Louisville RHP Jon Adkins and OF Josh Anderson...there are 48 players left in Major League camp."

* Once the NCAA Tournament games started, that was what was on. However, before that, Eastbound & Down
was on, and everyone was watching Kenny Powers.

At one point, Ted Power walks in and says to Jon Adkins, "I had much better hair than that."

He also joked, "You know how much I'm makin from this thing? What do they call it? A technical advisor."

* Chatted for a second with Barry Larkin. He said he's been having a blast working with the minor leaguers.

He mentioned, in particular, shortstop Miguel Rojas, "he's special," Larkin said.

I'd heard from Todd Benzinger on the caravan that Rojas could play, defensively, in the big leagues right now and be one of the best in the game. Larkin didn't disagree.

Larkin told a story that the other day he was working on a drill with Rojas and the youngster just couldn't get it. Well, the next day Larkin comes out at 8:30 when he was scheduled to work with some of the young players. Larkin looks out and the field isn't pristine like it usually is in the morning. He asks one of the coaches if the groundskeeper had missed the field. Nope, Rojas was out at 7:30 perfecting the drill. When Larkin got with him again, he "owned that drill."

I love looking at the confused faces staring back at a big green Reds logo. "Aren't their colors, um... red?"

* I'm guessing most of you probably had to work yesterday; but here in Savannah, the whole town shuts down for a big party. A free update to the app will be released by the end of March.

- In April, we'll begin work on both a native iPad app and making some small changes to the Cnati.com website. This includes moving our mobile website out of beta, reorganizing some of our content and making our featured stories and recent blog posts easier to find.

Thank you for reading and supporting Cnati.com. GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Dusty Baker said the team's narrowed its search for the fifth starter by one, moving Mike Lincoln to the bullpen.

"We're starting to narrow it down," Baker said. "We're going back to having some meetings and it's going to go down to the wire, even if we have to use minor league games and B games and things like that. We need to get some of those guys to get their innings up."

Aroldis Chapman is safely in that discussion. He's now thrown 7 innings, allowed four hits, a run, a homer, two walks and 10 strikeouts. However, his ERA did balloon to 1.29.

"He got behind on Rickie Weeks and other than that, he was throwing strikes. He looked outstanding. The more I look at him, the more he reminds me of a guy I faced and played with in Puerto Rico, Rogelio Moret, he's built like him," Baker said. "He had a nasty slinker today, it was a two-seamer we didn't even know he had. He's adding to his repitoire of pitches and he's more confident. He threw the ball well, Arthur Rhodes threw the ball well, Masset threw the ball well. Lehr threw the ball OK."
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- When you watch hundreds of baseball games a year, sometimes the discussion, oddly enough, turns to things outside baseball.

That was the case yesterday in Tucson, where the day before the Diamondbacks had gotten into a little bru-ha-ha with the Mariners.

So, of course, the question first was how did we go a year with Jonny Gomes on the team and no fights? Here's a guy who got into two in spring training in 2007.

And then the topic became which player do you want on your side in a fight? The unanimous choice was Gomes. And then the question became who's No. 2?

I told Jonny of our discussion today.

He said, "You don't need a second. I'll be No. 2,
too."

He noted that he holds the Rays minor league and major league record for
being hit by pitches and has never charged the mound.

"Anytime I got in a squabble, it's having the back of my teammates," Gomes said. "I
don't need to fight on my own."

Which is the reason, of course, he's the easy pick. He'll always have your back. That and the mohawk.

After that discussion, we moved on to all-time Reds and Hal McCoy came up with Kevin Mitchell, which was pretty much agreed upon as the right answer. Even Gomes went along with that.

"That's my
guy," Gomes said.

One pitcher did go with a non-Gomes pick on the current Reds roster,
saying he'd go with Scott Rolen, noting the third baseman is closer to
the pitcher, and someone could swing around Gomes, they're not going to
swing over Rolen.

Even Gomes could see the logic in that line of thinking.

"Don't sleep on the little guys," Gomes said. "DRay will bite your
ankles."

There's also the train of thought that the quiet guys, once they snap...
watch out. That's why Votto was a darkhorse. "You saw him last year in
New York," one teammate said.

My choice for No. 2 was Nix and Gomes said he liked that pick. Nix is a big dude -- and quiet. The quiet ones, man, you gotta watch out for them.

I know I wouldn't charge the mound if Nick Masset were on it, that's for sure.

The all-time guy you didn't want was Rob Dibble. He may have been big, but Ed Ott got him in a chokehold in Houston and then there's Lou taking him out. Paul Wilson earned an honorable mention, but at least he went after a much bigger guy in Kyle Farnsworth, not smart, but at least valiant.

Kip Wells suggest an All-Brawl team. All I know is that in my fantasy All-Brawl league, if I've got the No. 1 pick, I'm going with the man with the mohawk. If Gomes is taken, I may have to go with Carlos Zambrano, he's big and crazy. A dark horse could be Homer Bailey, he could be armed.

Today's guest blogger, Dave's hoping St. Patrick's Day revelers pass out sometime later this morning or early afternoon and sober up in time to give this a read.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH -- Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the year. At this point I'd have to say it's better than my birthday. I speak from experience when I say taking in all sessions at one of the venues - first or second rounds or both - is a must at some point. I was in Columbus in '04 when ETSU gave UC a scare and UAB beat top-seeded Kentucky and it was outstanding. Thing is, there's a good chance you're going to see a thriller, a big upset, something. And the ticket isn't as tough as you'd think if you know where to look (schools often return part of their allotments). Of course, I've always wanted to be in Vegas, too, for the first Thursday through Sunday of the tourney; I've heard great things.

* I'm not sure what Thad Matta was doing if he wasn't taunting Michigan's bench after Evan Turner's buzzer-beater. I guess he could've been yelling at the score/timekeeper or an official to count the shot, but I think it's much more likely he was yelling at John Beilein, who was apparently the only Big Ten head coach who didn't vote for Turner for conference player of the year.

* Can't get enough of John Wall steamrolling Rick Stansbury. Kyle Singler crushing Dan Shulman is a close second.

* As a former SI.com producer and longtime friend of Sycamore High grad Stewart Mandel, I shamelessly plug his bracket breakdown and steps to picking a winning bracket.

* Josh Hamilton says 'Spring Training doesn't mean anything,' so I guess I'll cancel my upcoming trip.

* Somebody tell 36-year-old Mike Sweeney Spring Training doesn't mean anything. Dude is raking. Started off 12-for-16.

* The Billings Mustangs have scheduled a Jason LaRue Bobblehead Night for Aug. 7. Road trip! You'll have to chip in gas money for this one though, and not just say you're going to and conveniently forget.

* On a related note, Billings' Drew Stubbs Bobblehead Night is July 10, meaning he could have two bobblehead giveaways in one month if he wins the vote in the Reds' Fans Choice Bobblehead giveaway (July 31). And if heaven forbid he were sent down to Louisville for whatever reason before July AND he won the vote, he might not even be playing for either of those two teams when his bobbleheads would be given away.

* Why is it that entertainment "news" sites can say pretty much anything they want to about a celebrity (based on information from "sources") but a report surfaces about a possible Pujols-for-Ryan-Howard trade and everyone (Pujols and Tony La Russa in particular) gets all bent out of shape and takes it personally instead of just dismissing it as speculation or rumor?

* Hated to see that former Red Ron Villone was among the Nationals' latest cuts. Always liked him.

* I've got a fantasy draft coming up on Friday. It's only Wednesday and I'm ready to explode. I sometimes feel bad about giving friends grief about World of Warcraft because come to think of it I'm probably just about as big a dork when it comes to the Reds, baseball cards and fantasy baseball. And this year seems like as good a year as any to refrain from using an early pick on a closer.

* Cartersville, Georgia native Butch Walker (like Trent, I call the Peach State my former stomping grounds) is opening for Train at Madison Theater on April 1. I'm not a Train fan but I don't intend to miss Butch. My favorite Butch album: "Sycamore Meadows." Biggest celebrity other than Butch from Cartersville (which Butch has actually joked about in concert): Newman.

* Upon further review, running back Ronnie Brown, Padres prospect Donavan Tate and former baseball great Rudy York were also from Cartersville.

* It's funny that Trent mentioned "Police Academy" in Monday's TOL because my uncle, Jeffrey Feldman (credited as Jeffrey Stevens), was in "Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach." He was in the scene where Hooks is working on crowd control and forces a group chanting 'Hell, no! We won't go' to fall into a swimming pool.

* And here you go in case you were ever wondering what happened to Marion Ramsey, who portrayed Hooks in the first six "Police Academy" films.

* Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel as Laverne and Shirley? No thanks. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather see Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams ... they're both still working, right?

TUCSON, Ariz -- For the second day in a row, the Reds knock out 13 runs, beating the Diamondbacks 13-7.

"This game's fun when you're hitting," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

The Reds finished with 14 hits, including two each from Drew Stubbs, Miguel Cairo and Jay Bruce.

Not only did the Reds get runs home, they got some young players in the game, including second baseman Kris Negron (who came over in the Alex Gonzalez trade) and catcher Chris McMurray.

"That's something all of us remember," Baker said.

Bruce nearly had three hits, getting robbed in his last at-bat on a diving catch by Arizona's Cole Gillespie. Bruce also hit his second homer of the spring and is now batting .391.

"Jay's got his stroke going pretty good, it's fun to see this early," Baker said.

Baker also liked what he saw from Logan Ondrusek and Philippe Valiquette, even though Valiquette gave up three runs on two hits and hit two batters.

"He's going to be good once he gets control of the strike zone and he tightens up his breaking ball a little bit," Baker said. "He's got big league stuff, but right now minor league command. He's going to be a very good pitcher."

And then there was the big question of the day, how would Juan Francisco look in left field? Well, he looked abotu the same as he does at third base or in warmups. No balls were hit his way.

"Isn't that how it goes?" Baker said. "He was going to get a lot or none. We saw that wind blowing (19 mph right to left at gametime) out there and said 'oh Lord, this is not the day to break in at leftfield.' But it was all good."

Baker wouldn't commit to another outing for Francisco in left anytime soon, but did say he would be there soon.

Francisco was 1-for-3 with an RBI single Tuesday. He swung at the first pitch he saw in each of his three at-bats.

"That's who he is right now," Baker said. "Right now. That's what we're afraid of, when the word gets around about pitch selection. You'd rather have a guy that you'd rather calm down than prod to swing. He's agressive. I'd say."

Also, Jordan Smith bounced back with a scoreless inning.

"Yes, he did a very nice job," Baker said. "That's very important to get a guy right back out there as soon as you can. His ball had more movement and life today than it did the other day."

And most importantly, Dusty agreed with our picks of Jonny Gomes as the current and Kevin Mitchell as the all-time choice for Red by your side in a brawl.

Current and former journalists were invited to call in with their
stories, so Trent called to talk about CNati.com. Listen to the audio here (CNati talk begins around the 18 minute mark).

* Mark Teahen's dog Espy has a Twitter account and now that Espy has a new little sister named Ribi, pictures like this, this, and this are a regular thing. I dare you to resist the boxer.

* Martha Stewart was in town yesterday! She was pitching her new green cleaning products line to Kroger. I know this won't stop you from hating on Martha with your comments, but be gentle: I love the woman a whole lot.

* Items on the menu at Sky Blue Sky Sandwich Company, a Wilco-themed restaurant in Toronto, are all named after Wilco songs.

* I realize two things about this link:
it's from last August, so it's not your typical "fresh" TOL link, and
also, there are 500 songs. But even with that large number of songs,
I'm surprised at how many are total unknowns to me.

* Inhalable chocolate, created

LA, but this season they have been back in NY and I'm loving it again.
Only downside is that the show is on Lifetime now instead of Bravo, and
I try to avoid watching anything on Lifetime if I can help it. And for

which fast food restaurant to choose for lunch. (Oh wow, in looking up
the link for the fast food one, I just learned that there are also flowcharts for cereal, beer, the produce aisle, and more. You're welcome!)

* My sister shared this link with me: How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You. Looks like I'm a goner.

* One NJ school has hired a recess coach to teach kids how to play again.

* Google Buzz.
