* Laynce Nix says he's ready and available. Nix hadn't played since last Monday in Pittsburgh because of back spasms.

"I'm fine," Nix said. "I'm swinging, I'm available. I'm good to go."

Nix said it happens "now and then" but he's "working around it."

* Was told by a club official that they're "close" to signing Cuban OF Felix Perez. There are other teams involved, so they're waiting until there's actual ink on paper to celebrate.

* Joe Kay of the AP is working on a story about the Reds' ability to go first-to-third on singles, something they've done 32 times this year, and five times yesterday. One of those yesterday was by Bronson Arroyo.

"It's the only time you feel like a real baseball player, running the bases, pitching doesn't count," Arroyo said with a laugh.

"A complete game doesn't make you a 'real' baseball player?" MLB.com's Mark Sheldon asked.

"No, that makes you a real player, it just doesn't make you feel like one," Arroyo said.

Arroyo said the team's aggression is in part thanks to the team's veterans, Scott Rolen and Orlando Cabrera.

"They bring things to this team we haven't had here before," Arroyo said. "Scott is a stickler for playing the game the right way and doing the right things. Orlando brings a lot of energy and is always looking to go first-to-third or steal a bag when someone's not looking."

* Tomorrow's Brewers starter is lefty Manny Parra.
