You may notice some new ads (and I hope you do notice the ads) from the Reds.

The Reds are a paid advertiser on CNati.com and we really appreciate their business. Don't worry this won't change our coverage of the Reds (they place ads in the Enquirer too), but we are thankful for them and I think they realize the need for more outlets to cover their team. It's a forward-thinking organization and I thank the and you should too.

So, they're going to be buying the occassional ads from us and if you're interested in going to the game anyway and buying your online, if you could do it from our link, it'd be appreciated.

Thanks.

* The Reds are the 25th most valuable franchise of the 30 in MLB. Behind the Reds are the Blue Jays, Marlins, Rays, A's and Pirates.

* This bobblehead T is awesome, too bad right now it's only available for baseball's self-designated "popular" teams -- the Cubs, Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers.

* I loved the Padres and Braves going 80s yesterday, even though it's kind of odd to see them on Jackie Robinson Day. I guess if you're going to have to do a whole new set of unis, you can make them interesting.

* A list of the last player for every team to wear No. 42. For the Reds? The immortal Roger Salkeld.

* Some of the numbers other than 42 worn by Jackie Robinson.

* I hate the
idea of Congress pressuring MLB to ban smokeless tobacco. It's said many places, but it's weird to me to ban something that has no impact and real need to be banned. Why should a big leaguer not be able to have dip or chaw or whatever if a guy int eh first row can? It's not like smoking that impacts those around him.

Oh, it's the kids, right?

Doing it for the kids never seems to make much sense to me. There was no bigger fan of George Brett than me when I was growing up. And Brett was notorious for his cheekful of chaw. The worst it did for me was give me a desire for some Big League Chew. When I figured out what it really was, I thought it was disgusting. I wanted to hit like George Brett, but never did I want to use tobacco becuase of him. Maybe I was different than other kids (maybe?) but still, shouldn't we give kids some credit to think for themsleves?

* Stay classy Phillies fans.

* Ranking the organizations, although I'm not so sure what the methodology is other than "Dusty bad."

* I love the Lexington Legends T-shirt Gatling gun. The Legends have their home-opener tonight. My friend David is going to be one of the skydivers jumping into the stadium.

* Jason Whitlock nails it again. I don't always agree with Jason, but he always makes me think. Always. Here he blames the "mainstream media" for running with Jerry Jones' comments about Bill Parcells and Tim Tebow.

* A critique of Ben Roethlisberger coverage.

* Looks like you'll have Hines Ward around for at least two more years, he says he'll retire as soon as he wins another Super Bowl.

* A really cool story about Saints offensive lneman Carl Nicks, who went back to Nebraska to appoligize to the people there for his behavior while enrolled in school. It's a really nice first step.

* Some big changes in college football, well, one big change and one silly one. No more messages on eyeblack. But the bigger change is that a celebration penalty will now be enforced from the spot of the foul and nullify a score. I'm kind of sick of the whole thing, just let people have fun when they play a agame.

* This is a brilliant idea -- taking the game-following apps local. It's easiest with baseball, naturally, but I'm sure there will be something similar as soon as football season rolls around.

* Great news locally -- Christian Moerlein is moving its brewing back to Cincinnati. Good for Greg Hardman and the folks at Christian Moerlein.

* My beard makes me trustworthy. (Thanks to Antonio for e-mailing me this link)

* The Pizza vs. Strippers vs. Guns map.

*
Shake-It will be among stores getting a limited edition version of The National's new album on May 11.

* Remember, tomorrow's Record Store Day -- support your local record store, or otherwise they may be gone. Hit Everybody's or Shake-It or Galaxy CDs in Hamilton (my buddy James' favorite) or whereever... record stays will be gone if we don't use them, and I'd hate to be without record stores.

I don't know, I kinda of agree with the idea that you can't dip during the game. I played baseball for a while and a lot of high school players dipped as well as our coach. All of these players started somewhere and I'm sure it has more to do with the culture of the game. What other professional sport can you use tobacco? Wouldn't it seem weird to see an NFL player or NBA player using dip? I don't think Congress should be the ones getting involved but I think MLB should have instituted a ban on smokeless tobacco a long time ago.

I don't know, kids will do or try what they want. I, like you, always leaned heavy on the Big League Chew as a kid. I knew what the big leaguers were doing, but grape big league chew was much better and all I was ever interested in trying. Plus I had parents that would've punished me severly if I walked in the house with dip or chaw. In the end a kid is going to try, not try, or do whatever they want at some point. The difference is, too many parents say well I did that when I was his age who am I to punish him? The parent that's who.

Don't most of the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties happen after the TD anyway? I know it could be a big deal, but is it going to take a way a TD if it happens after the play in the endzone? I personally am glad they are getting rid of the messages on eyeblack. I get so tired of entire segments during the game being about what the eyeblack means. Or hear for a week about Mike Vick being on Pryor's eye black. It just ends up being a distraction.

It's really curious that the overlords of college football would chose the celebration penalty to strengthen.

First, the enforcement seems super-arbitrary, even more than for other penalties. Because of that, there were all those race-related issues floating around its enforcement last year. (Were white refs calling that penalty more quickly on black celebration, but never on Tim Tebow?) Drastically increasing the penalty would magnify the fallout. Second, no one is really hurt by a celebration. Third, what is the evidence that the current enforcement is not sufficient? Are celebration penalties more common than pass interference, offsides, etc.?

It makes more sense to eliminate the penalty, since it is so arbitrary, instead of drastically increasing the punishment.

I predict this rule change, scheduled for 2011, never comes to pass.

Any taunting prior to crossing the goal line will cost the team points. A flip into the end zone, called back? High stepping Walter Payton style? It BS. The eye black, who cares. Taking points off the board is where this needs to stop.

BTW, Jason Whitlock can be a moron sometimes but 2 days in a row I can't disagree with him.

That Philly fan incident is just amazing to me. How sick am I. I still chucked a little reading it.

Philly fans are always nuts. Nothing surprises me out of the fans in that city.

If you are gonna boo Santa and cheer injuries, I'm guessing projectile vomiting is not out of the realm of possibility.

Buildings are not cheap and not everybody is able to buy it. However, home loans was created to aid different people in such kind of situations.
