Thinking out loud 2.19.10

I can't tell you how nice it was yesterday to hear some familiar sounds -- spikes on concrete, baseball hitting leather, just those sounds of baseball. I didn't hear much of the crack of the bat, but I know it's coming -- why waste all the good thigns at once?

I'm one of those baseball romantics, just the sound makes me excited, sue me. I've gotten sick of snarkiness and coolness, it's something that's been bothering me about the ol' internets. Why not just let yourself enjoy stuff without worrying about someone else laughing at ernestness? (This exludes the Dave Matthews Band, sorry.)

Actually, I'm only half-kidding on that last part.

But with spring in the air (and a cold in my chest), I'm excited that baseball's back.

* Tom Verducci has Homer Bailey as one of those to watch for arm injury because of the "Verducci effect."

* I'm sure some with the Reds are laughing at all the "if's" in this story about Sarasota and renovations to Ed Smith Stadium. We'll see if it ever gets done.

* Is Bobby Cox one of baseball's all-time great managers? I see both sides of the argument and I'm not sure which one I believe.

* John Clayton says Marvin Lewis deserves an extension. I agree, but does he want one, I think, is a better question.

* Football Outsiders looks at the off-season in the AFC North.

* Zach Collaros is apparently a good dodgeball player, too.

* A sad story in high school/college football with the murder-suicide death of an Atlanta-area player headed to Vanderbilt.

* I know it's cool to hate the Olympics, but I watched part of the Canada-Switzerland hockey game last night and it was incredible.

* The Olympics are showcasing "real women."

* Who wouldn't want
to buy the place where David Silver finally got it on with Donna Martin?

* Spin.com talks to friend of CNati.com Greg Dulli.

* Listen, I like Nirvana as much as the next guy, and maybe even more. But do we really need a Kurt Cobain biopic? I read Heavier Than Heaven and didn't come away thinking, "that'd be a great movie." I came away thinking, "never do heroin" and that movie has already been made.

* Of course, I could be wrong, I loved Walk the Line , but I'd read Cash: The Autobiography and thought it'd make a great movie. Anyway, Greg Kot reviews the new Cash albumAmerican VI: Ain't No Grave

* Black Francis wants to get paid. And I don't blame him.

* Slice asks the age-old question, how much do you tip the pizza guy?

* If you were in Atlanta Thursday and thought you saw a zebra running down the street, you either got bad drugs or you really saw a zebra running down the street.

* Vanity Fair responds to the criticism of its criticism of Cincinnati. And the Cincinnati Man responds.

Great vid of Aroldis, ctr. Well done. I could watch those guys play long toss for hours. There's something hypnotic and soothing about all of it. Keep up the great work out there in the wide open skies of AZ!

Hey Trent .. I was out in Phoenix for the week. I drove around the site on Wednesday ... until someone on a golf cart came and told me I could not be there!!

The facility looks great ... I am glad you are there to keep us updated. I will be back out there the first week of march. I leave before the Reds first game ... do you know if any of the practices will be open to the public ... specifically in March 1-4 ?

Great site .. keep up the good work!

I'm hoping this turns out to be the best $30 mil Big Bob spends while owning the Reds in regards to A.C.

Great coverage out the gate CTR. It's the best $25 I've spent getting you out there! I'm buying my Opening Day tickets through the power pack tomorrow. Can't get here fast enough!

Are you waiting for Saturday for any particular reason?

I think spikes on concrete was my favorite sound of spring back when I played in high school.

I still enjoy walking on small-rock gravel and getting a similar sound.

The Verducci paragraph on Bailey infuriates me, mostly because I was saying the same exact things as it was happening and hurling insults at Dusty in the process.

I believe the discussion here was to not worry about it, that I was making a big deal over pretty much nothing. But then you get to the bottom of Verducci's article and it says that only 4 of 34 of his at-risk pitchers that he's identified have escaped the next year without injury and with a lower ERA. The Reds really need Bailey to be the rare exception to this. IMHO, his progression will be a critical component to the success of the team this year.

FYI, the monthly archive links to the blog come up with blank pages. Not that anyone really wants me linking back there anyway, so maybe that's a good thing.
