Thinking out loud 11.2.9

One of those things that reminds me just how much I love baseball -- Johnny Damon's two stolen bases on one pitch in the 9th inning. How much did that change the complexion of the game?

At first (with TV you don't see the whole field) I wondered what the heck he was doing, but then saw that they'd had the shift on against DRT Mark Teixeira and Damon was able to advance to third because nobody was there.

And Damon was only able to do that because of his amazing at-bat against Lidge. Man, do I love baseball -- because even if you do have a $200 million payroll (and an idiot manager) you still have to make plays. Give the Yankees credit, they did it when they needed to do so.

* So, for all those Yankee fans, is A-Rod a real Yankee now?

* A-Rod is a weird, weird dude -- and he seems to like himself. A lot. (I've heard some former teammates really bash the guy, but loved Jeter.)

But at least it gave us @IAmCentaur on Twitter.

* I said Phillies in 6, now I just don't see them winning it. The one thing I wondered about was the back of the bullpen -- and it seems to have been the difference in this series so far.

* A really, really cool website with all the World Series rings. Although, I will say, it's tough to do those justice with just pictures. If you've seen one of those badboys up in person (especially those from the last 10 years or so), they're monsters.

A couple of years ago, the Reds were in Houston and some of his teammates wanted to see his collection, and Mike Stanton brought in all his rings (in a grocery bag). It was amazing (as a Brave in the early 90s and a Yankee in the late 90s, early 2000s, he had more than a few). They all had huge boxes and were not small.

I looked it up, Stanton appeared in 53 postseason games. That's a lot.

* RedsFest tickets go on sale today -- you can get them at GABP, Meijer, Reds.com and on the hone 513.381.REDS.

If you're a Reds fan -- or a baseball fan -- it's totally worth it. I look forward to going every year and I don't care about autographs or anything like that.

* A look from above of the new Reds spring training complex in Goodyear, Ariz.

* Only 29 of the 60 papers that cover MLB home-and-road are at the World Series. And we know there will be at least one fewer daily paper covering home-and-road. That number would be lower if it weren't New York and Philly in the Series.

* Jeff Pearlman on the disgrace that is Mark McGwire and the Cardinals.

* Looks like another week of will-they-or-won't-they sell out Sunday's game against the Ravens. Ugh. I don't know if I expect another bailout. I understood the first game and then the last one, but now it seems like more of a trend.

* An amazing story about Billy Cannon from ESPN's Wright Thompson.

* As bad as watching Georgia get thumped by Florida and see the end of a pretty good run in the program was looking like clowns in the process. When you have one of the great uniforms in sports, you don't change it. You don't see Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Alabama or Penn State doing anything stupid like that. Mark Richt, you're better than that. Or you used to be. Lane Kiffin does, sure, but he's Lane Kiffin. And there's no way to make Tennessee look good.

* Now, I'm not a fan of the Bengals uniforms, but I'd stop short of including them among the worst uniforms in sports history. (Really, the easiest thing in the world to fix those uniforms is to fill in the stupid white stripe on the side of the jersey and to maybe replace the "bengal" stripes on the side of the pants with no stripes, or plain stripes.

* I have no idea what I'm going to look forward to in my life now that Brett Favre has returned to Lambeau Field...

* Very cool that the Bears honored Walter Payton on the 10th anniversary of his death.

I have a signed Walter Payton poster in my office. It's one of my favorite things. He came to a sporting goods store in Corpus Christi, Texas, when we lived there as a promotional thing for KangaROOS shoes, who sponsored Payton. I remember my dad and I walked in right behind Payton and were awed at just how short he was, but he had these broad shoulders. I got the promo poster, got it signed and just said something about being a fan, as did my dad. He said thank you quietly in that voice of his and that was it. I'll always remember it.

* Watch the NBA on your iPhone -- if you're into that kind of thing.

* A cool story of sportsmanship in high school cross-country.

* If you're planning your week and you need some stuff to read, well, if you're open Thursday, you're in luck. Head to the LaRosa's on Colerain (the new one near the Meijer and Best Buy and all that) and Kerry Coombs will be there along with authors Josh Katzowitz and Lonnie Wheeler, who both have books that feature Coombs -- Bearcats Rising and Cincinnati Schoolboy Legends

* This cracked me up -- bird crap on a Google street view.

* Dave Eggers reviews a new collection of Kurt Vonnegut stories.

* Reader Jason sent me this link, is Nick Hornby more Springsteen or Dylan?

* This flow chart for Hey Jude is awesome.

* I had a kid (probably 9 or 10) come to the door Saturday night dressed as Sgt. Pepper-era John Lennon. He got more candy than anyone else.

The DLP was pretty consistent giving two pieces of candy. I started at three -- you got more if you were small and cute or had a great costume. You got two if you were in costume but didn't say "trick or treat" and one if you were too old to be trick or treating.

* This list of rules should be handed to every waiter ever.

* A guy in Chicago is going to win a sum "in four figures" for eating only sausage pizza for a month.

I can't stand the Yankees or New Yorkers in general, but guys like Damon and Jeter I respect. They know how to play the game and they play it right. That being said, ARod is one of the top 5 douchebags in sports among active players.

I agree with you about Georgia and their Uniforms. Why change the helmet? I couldn't imagine Ohio State taking the field in a red helmet with a Silver stripe. Georgia looked like Cleveland Glenville high school. I hate when they where black jersey's too.

I was disappointed that they played as bad as their uni's looked, but honestly look at his stats, should Tim Tebow really be a top 5 Heisman candidate this year? That award is becoming more of a joke every year where a guy is rewarded because his team keeps winning. Florida has not played that great of a schedule this year. Tebow is not even the best player in his conference.
