Damn Good Dog.
There will be no mascot on the sideline for the bulldogs this weekend.
I never met VII, I'd played with VI before, and V was the Uga when I was in school -- and I'd gotten to pet him several times. This is one day I'd be OK with UGA wearing black.
Check out how cute this guy was.
* I think I've mentioned before that I'm a little fascinated with concussions in football. The AP did a nice story on concussions with interviews with 160 players (five per team -- Rey Maualuga is given an uncredited quote when it talks about talking gibberish on the sideline.)
Here's some of the raw numbers and then more of the responses.
Jon Kitna, like Carson Palmer earlier this year, says he believes a player will die on the field.
One suggestion to help cut down on brain injuries is to practice without helmets.
Or have no helmets altogether.
* Two Cy Young voters explain how they got to their Cy Young votes. One a writer from St. Louis, another from San Francisco -- neither voted for the same person or for the winner. I didn't vote this year. I voted the last two years and I'll tell you, most everyone I know puts in the same amount of work as these two. I know I did. Someone asked me the other day who I'd vote for -- I honestly don't know. I didn't vote, so I didn't put in the work to figure out who I would vote for. I'm not sure there was a wrong answer among the three. (The AL Cy Young, on the other hand...)
* I'm really not sure how I feel about the new Royals alternate hat. One great thing about the Royals is that their classic hat is just that, a classic. They've had several "away" hats -- and each time it's the split with a different color crown than bill (gray with royal bill, black with royal bill, royal with black bill). I like a solid hat, so that's what I'm not liking about the new one. I think it would have worked better had it been all powder blue (although I do like the royal blue outline on the KC).
* A cool series from Big League Stew -- the beginner's guide to advanced stats, starting with BABIP.
* This time-lapse photography from Game 6 of the World Series is pretty damn cool. Even if you do have to see the Yankees win again.
* From college baseball, sad story that UGA second baseman Chance Veazey is paralyzed below the waist.
* Jason Segel joined the Swell Season on stage in LA.
* The contest for a Gap iPhone app sets the scene for what makes a great iPhone app. Trust me, the Cnati iPhone app is being worked on right now and it's killer.
* When Cnati has a world headquarters and I have a killer office, I want this desk.
* Free beer and cash for your PBR art. I actually know a guy who has his entire head tattooed with a PBR bottle cap.
* If you're looking to start Christmas shopping early, check out the Cincinnati Unchained event sponsored by BuyCincy.com on Saturday. Remember, every dollar you spend at a local business has three-times the power in the local economy of a dollar spent at a chain.
* Cooking for Thomas Keller -- it's like throwing BP to Babe Ruth.
* Richard Blais writes about Eli on Top Chef. Really sweet stuff. I liked Eli a lot, but Kevin's still my guy.
* The producers of Top Chef have a new show they're working on.

Why isn't there the same backlash that the St. Louis guy voted for two Cardinal pitchers ahead of the winner, Lincecum as there was when the Detroit guy voted for Verlander?
did you read their explanations? one made sense... the other didn't
greinke was far and away the best pitcher in the al, and the only one close was hernandez. in the nl, you had three good choices (and i'd had haren in that mix, as well)
Wait...you have a vote for Cy Young and you decided this year not to use it?
LOL. Maybe they should give your privledge to somebody who will use it.
I didn't even think Verlander was in the discussion for Cy Young, I heard no one make a case for him going down the stretch. It seemed to me that the National League was coming down to 2 guys, that's why I was surprised my Lincecum, but looking at the numbers I can't argue it.
I did think Gardenhire should have gotten Manger of the year in the AL. What the guy is able to do with what he's given is amazing I think. I know Scosia had an unreal amount of adversity to overcome this year though.
Didn't Uga take a bite at an opposing player last year or early this year? I loved that! i remember seeing that on TV and thinking now that's is a good Mascot.
I did not have a cy young vote this year
Do they randomly select people to vote for these awards or is there a criteria that you as a writer have to meet to be selected? How many people end up voting? I'd imagine it'd be quite an honor to be selected. If you can be selected to vote for the awards is it conceivable to think you'd get a HOF vote too? Or is that reserved for a select few?
the bbwaa award voters are selected by and among members of the bbwaa. i would have been eligible this year, except for after the layoff and while i was getting this ready, i missed most of the year. i was not asked -- and would not have accepted -- a vote this year, because i was not there enough.
the hall of fame vote you must have covered baseball and been an active bbwaa member for 10 consecutive years. we'll see if i can continue my streak. this was year 6 for me. scott has 9.
I'm responding to yesterday's Super Mario Brothers review now too. I rented it last night at blockbuster and I must say, the game is awesome! I'm definitely asking Santa for it for Christmas.
UGA VII will be always remembered... as the first Uga to never beat Tech!
Just ran across your website; you do a great job and have some really in depth interesting articles. Good to see all the misplaced newspaper sports writers could find a place to continue writing, especially online. I often wish that the Enquirer was at least as online savy as the AJC. Keep up the good work!
By the way, I'm hoping Kevin goes all the way too. His laid back attitude and simple southern cooking makes him the best.
I'll stay with the current trend... if Michigan upsets OSU, then the Bengals will also be upset in Oakland
and the OSU throwbacks look pretty sharp... but it looks silly when only one team on a field wears throwbacks (but the wolverine helmets are a perpetual...yet very cool... throwback)
I hate, the WHITE helmet though. Ohio State's Silver Helmet is awesome. I also miss the buckeye leafs.
C Trent, I'll give UC credit for stopping J. Rodgers. I think he should definitley be in the Heisman discussion. 18 total TD's, all the rushing yards, and 62 receptions. What player means that much to their team? Maybe some hw Oregon State will pull off the Pac 10 and he'll be on everyone's list.
