Can the World Series go ahead and start?

Oh, tonight? Right. Thanks.

It's taken long enough, right?

* Kerry Wood says his teammates in Chicago received racist hate mail -- as did Dusty Baker. He said there was certainly a double standard for the African-American players from Cub fans.

* How Ryan Howard changed his diet and may have saved his career.

* A history of Philadelphia-New York World Series.

* The NBA started last night. I've never lived in a place where the NBA was really a factor, the closest was when I lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, and we were sorta close to San Anotonio -- there still wasn't much interest. In Atlanta, there was zero interest in a the NBA, even though they have a team. A couple of years ago, my girlfriend at the time worked at CNN Center and they were giving away playoff tickets for free, and so we went.

Cincinnati, of course, once had a team and doesn't anymore. Why doesn't Cincinnati care about the NBA?

I don't know that I really understand. Why?

* One thing about the NBA, it looks really good in HD.

* Do SEC officials play favorites? Current Tennessee assistant and former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron says they do.

* South Carolina players remember what UT coach Lane Kiffin said this off-season about pumping gas. (FYI, the player quoted at the end of the story -- Clifton Geathers -- is the little brother of Robert Geathers Jr. -- well, younger brother, at 6-8, 281)

* If Jacquizz Rogers is deserving of Heisman consideration, what does that say about UC's defense that held him to 73 yards?

* Four easy rules for athletes on Twitter.

* We're No. 9! Among the top 40 metro areas, Cincinnati is ranked the 9th safest. I guess that's about right. I've lived here five years and barely ever felt unsafe.

* An interview with Chuck Klosterman.

* A profile of Paul Reubens (you know, Pee-Wee Herman).

* From my man Redscoop, legendary Athens band Pylon has a new album on iTunes and a free download here.

* Is Google doing its own turn-by-turn (free) navigation app?

* My favorite show on TV is back on tonight -- Friday Night Lights returns and Alan Sepinwall says it's fantastic. And I can't see it until next summer. I've had so much trouble figuring out torrents, which stinks. Anyone have an easy Mac torrent client and place to find FNL? Or anyone have a way to burn me a DVD?

* TNT may be picking up Southland, a show I really liked that NBC abandoned because it wanted Jay Leno on five days a week at 10 p.m. Comedy Central is picking up Mike Judge's the Goode Family, which I wasn't so high on.

* If you're in Atlanta, check out this tasting from the fine folks at Terrapin brewery. I really want to get some of their Depth Charge espresso milk stout -- I was introduced to their Gamma Ray recently and fell in love.

I have always and will always HATE cubs fans. They come down here for games all the time and cause trouble and are just awful people. So this news from Kerry Wood is not surprising at all. Did I mention that I HATE cubs fans?

I really like Ryan Howard. Dude can flat out play and he seems to be a class at. I hope he stays in good shape and He and Pujols can rewrite the record books together. Get this sport past the controversy and asterisks.

SEC officials are definitely biased. It's amazing to me that every time there is a controversy it is a call that benefitted a top 5 team at the time. I think Lane Kiffin's complaint does not hold much water as it seems he didn't understand the rules for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, but the Georgia and Arkansas calls were ridiculous. I think there was even a lot of grumbling from the Florida game last weekend.

FNL is definitely in my top five for current shows. Last year I had Time Warner and had to wait until the summer to catch the new season. This year I have DirecTV so I'm pretty stoked to watch it as it airs.

Ctrent- just watch Friday Night Lights on www.sidereel.com. That is how I kept up with the show last year during the fall season. They usually have the episode posted up by sometime the next morning. The site is easy, and you watch the shows streaming- you do not need to download anything.

With Xavier and UC both in town I suppose no need for the NBA exists for a lot of Cincy folks. It's disappointing. I think most people don't realize how good the NBA is these days. And the arguments used by many to claim college is better than the NBA:

a) the players in college try harder and care
b) they play better fundamental, real basketball
b) the game is more fun to watch

are either false at this point (the Suns under Nash were probably the most fun team I have ever seen) or the same exact argument they would laugh at if used by someone to justify watching the WNBA over the NBA (they care! they have good fundamentals!).

It's disappointing because the league has plenty of franchises in trouble and we could probably poach one. I've written about this twice before:

http://www.whodeyrevolution.com/whodeyrevolution/2009/03/my-stupid-dream-continued-more-on-the-nba.html

but if we're considering building a casino, why not just snag a more wholesome NBA team instead?

Ok, here's what you do for Mac torrents.

1) You need a client to download them, I highly recommend Transmission.

2) You need a place to search for torrents, you can go to isohunt.com or torrentzilla.org ... once you find the show/episode from your search, you look for the .torrent link, it'll download to your desktop and should automatically open Transmission.

3) If your file (that you downloaded) contains lots of flies with .r01, .r02, that's not an issue - these are just subdivided files that you need to "join" up. What you'll need then isan app named "UnRarX" (which you'll use to open up the .rar file).

4) You'll probably need a player like VLC player to view most of the files (I try and download .mkv, which are of the better quality videos)

If you're confused, just email me ;-)

Azureus is good for torrents on macs, and mininova.org usually has anything you need.

you'll also need to go to portforward.com to set up your router to get things rolling

so i've heard

My interest in the NBA ebbs and flows. Last season and this season I'm on kind of a downswing. My main complaint is that the games are too long. I can hardly stand to watch an entire game, especially the first half when you know that it doesn't necessarily have much bearing on the final outcome. It's probably an exaggeration or a misconception but I just feel like there are only a few isolated stretches in any NBA game when either or both teams are really trying to affect the outcome of the game, and the rest of the time they are treading water.

In college basketball, the intensity is usually high from the opening tip because the halves are short and every basket counts. Not only that, but every game counts for much more since the season is so much shorter. I don't think the NBA needs to shorten its season, but shorter games would be much more watchable.

In the NFL every single play matters. That's why it's so popular. Also, every game matters, since the season is only 16 games long. It can't be matched in terms of entertainment value by a sport like the NBA because the intensity doesn't exist on a play to play or even a game to game basis in the League. It's a shame because there are really some of the best athletes in the world currently playing NBA basketball and some great young stars and personalities as well, it's just too boring a lot of the time to hold an out-of-market fan's attention over the course of a season.

I don't like the NBA, and never really have. Too much standing around, too many fouls that never get called, and too much letting the stars do whatever they want because they have "earned it". That being said, each year that goes by the less I like college basketball too. I don't agree that every game counts in college though as I'm reminded every year be commentators and fans a like who only seem to care about the last 12 games leading up to the conference tournaments. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say it's ok to lose in December, just have to play hot in February. Every year seeding seems to follow that logic too.

I also don't agree that every game means something in the NFL. Do you really think that the Browns and Chiefs game means anything to anyone? The reason the NFL is so popular is because everyone watches a game to see what their fantasy teams are doing. It's the only reason to check in on most of the games this year especially as there are so many bad teams.

Don't you think an NBA team would be more of a drag on the local economy than a casino? I mean, where are they going to play? In order to land one of the franchises don't you think the city or county would have to provide them an adequate arena. I don't think US Bank Arena will suffice for NBA. Not to mention what team would we get, the Grizzlies? Cincinnati fans have shown they won't come out and support a team that they even think won't win. Even when the Reds were playing really good baseball this may they could only sell a game out if there was a bobblehead being given away. With so much good college basketball in the city and just a short drive away, and a couple of NBA franchises not too far from here, I just could never see the NBA coming back to Cincinnati.

I care about the NBA! I care so much, I drove to cleveland to see that game last night. It was incredible. To the people of cleveland, the Cavs are their only hope. So they really, really care. That place was rockin'.I dont get why people dont get up for it in cincinnati. NBA is great on tv, but actually being there is something else entirely. Especially on opening night, with Shaq and Labronn. If we had a team, Id go all the time. I was very disappointed however that Big Baby wasnt suited up for the Celtics. He is one of my favorite players.

I also use Transmission and it works great. I've found the best sites for tv shows is EZtv.com. Never any duds and always good quality
