Thinking out loud 9.23.9

In these days when Washington beats USC, Central Michigan beats Michigan State, Northern Iowa takes Iowa to the brink and Navy is a two-point conversion from winning at overtime at Ohio Stadium -- why is out of the question for No. 14 Cincinnati to have a chance against No. 13 Ohio State?

Is it because of tradition? Is it that Ohio State plays in a bigger stadium? Is it because the recruiting ratings liked the Ohio State's players better than UC's? Or just because we all know it's Ohio State?

Now, I'm not saying UC is definitely better than OSU. The Buckeyes are a pretty darn good team -- but so are the Bearcats.

The reaction I got yesterday after Isaiah Pead said he thought the Bearcats were the best team in Ohio was that it was preposterous just to suggest a thing, that of course Ohio State would win and there's no chance UC would.

I honestly believe if they played 10 times, neither team would win more than six. I believe the Bearcats have the best quarterback in the state (at playing quarterback, not potential), the best playmaker and the best gameday coach. You take those things and you've got a chance -- no matter what uniform the other squad is wearing.

That's not to say next year, 5 years from now or 10 years from now UC could beat OSU -- this year they can. Would they? Well, unless there's a BCS matchup, we'll never know. There's no question OSU is the better program, but there are plenty of reasons why to think UC could be the better team this year.

* I can't say I disagree with one of my childhood heros Re: Tony Romo: "I don't know why on God's earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League," says Tony Dorsett.

* One reason I don't worry about Twitter replacing journalism? The gate-keepers. And sometimes it's good they're there. Ask Robert Henson.

* Royals farmhand Chris "Disco" Hayes asks some interesting questions -- the one I like is the thought of training situational relievers to play first base. Micah Owings could certainly do that (he played some first in college). Although, I'm not so sure I'd expect Daniel Ray Herrera to play over there.

* Forget sending out a ton of resumes, here's the new way to get a job.

* This is just awesome -- it's a map of all the McDonald's in the continental U.S. The furthest between two McDonald's in the United States is 107 miles, so you're always less than 60 miles from a McDonald's.

* Boris Yeltsin knew how to party, that's for sure.

* The Flaming Lips sure know how to make a video.

* And right after I wrote that I found the new video from The Eels.

* Neutral Milk Hotel's albums will be re-released on vinyl on Nov. 3

I'm an OSU fan and I agree that UC could beat Ohio State this year as well as other years. It's a good debate over which one is better this year. Who knows, they both could get into the BCS this year and play each other. By the way, Navy was a 2 pt conversion from tying Ohio State. Who knows what would of happened from there.

Correction: The Navy 2 point conversion would have tied the game, not win it.

I made few comments about the Ohio State/UC game and believe Ohio State would win, but I don't feel it's proposterous that UC could win. At this point in the season UC's offense is much farther along right now than Ohio State's. However, I did see some pretty stupid responses comparing the programs and tradition which have no place in the argument.

Tony Romo is way over rated. I have never seen a guy find a way to blow a big game in so many creative ways, botched snap on an extra point, throwing it right to the other team in the endzone etc.

C Trent, I mean to post this yesterday or shoot you a message about it, but I heard the ESPN "experts" debating AL Cy Young yesterday. They were going over Grenke's stats and Peter Gammons said I hope he can get 2 more wins to so he can win the Cy Young. He then said interesting stat, Grenke has only faced the Red Sox and Yankees one time(or last night was the first) and Roy Halladay has faced the 8 times. I thought to myself WTF does that have to do with anything??? Apparently, ERA against the Red Sox and Yankees is a new criteria voters have to account for as they are the only 2 teams with offense in the major leagues.

Not to be a dick, or "that" guy, but I will be in this case.

Shouldn't it be "two McDonald's" instead of "to McDonald's"?

I'll punish myself for my insubordination by eating a McDouble tonight.

It really is. ESPN amazes me sometimes. Of course I don't put much stock in what Gammons says anymore. He is always "breaking a story" about a trade that never happens.

Wins can be an important stat, but at the same time a pitcher has no control over that. Grenke is tops in ERA, way up there in strike outs. I heard today he is even tops in obscure stats like only 5 stolen bases have been allowed when he pitches. If he doesn't win the Cy Young than that award, in my mind, is as much of a joke as Gold Glove where Rafael Palmeiro can get first base gold glove and only start 10 games at first base in the season.
