The preseason opener is always a funny thing -- there's so much you want to see, but not much you can read into. Here's what I'll be looking for tonight: - Does Carson Palmer get hit? Normally you don't want this, but it would be good for him to get hit and overcome it - I would be interested in the line, but I'm not sure how much they're going to play with Palmer -- the timing with the QB is important and more telling than with a backup back there - How Kevin Huber does -- I actually hear people cheering punts at practice the other day. You don't hear that every day. - Roy Williams in coverage - Jordan Palmer has looked more comfortable this year, I want to see how that shows on the field. - Bernard Scott - Jerome Simpson * Remember when Mike Brown said the Bengals weren't interested in Michael Vick -- apparently he lied. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer was told the Bengals were the first team to offer Vick a contract -- the Redeemer indeed. As for a football decision, I'm not sure it would be a bad idea. But I'm glad Michael Vick isn't in the same city as me or my dogs. Personally, I'm glad I don't have to deal with that reprehensible human being. I don't even like thinking about what he did. I don't want to write any more because it forces me to think about that, and it just kills me. (And yes, I know what Leonard Little has done, doesn't mean I have to like him either -- but for the most part, I like dogs more than I like people.) * Yahoo!'s Michael Silver has a nice profile on Cedric Benson. I liked this from Benson: "I'm just glad to be in a place where they want me, and where I'm able to go out and kick some ass. I've got big dreams, man, big plans, but you never know. You never want to set yourself up for the letdown, so you just put your head down and push ahead." * Former Bengals Odell Thurman and Chris Perry are Florida Tuskers, whatever that is. * Ohio State and former Colerain LB Tyler Moeller's family issued a statement on his injury * Will the exclusion of baseball in the Olympics help the World Baseball Classic? To me, I see no difference to the WBC. The WBC needs some changes, but for hte most part, I love it. * This is a headline you never want to see: Adrian Beltre to the DL, could be lost for the season with injured testicle. That damn Berding, he's everywhere! (Sorry, inside joke) * Landon Donovan has Swine Flu * Yesterday was the three-year anniversary for the Cincinnati Roller Girls. Congrats CRG! * I was talking about this just the other day, but we're lucky in this city to have such a great library system. I'll pay $30 more a year to keep it going -- it's worth a ton more than that. * The Tribune Company is pushing out Sam Zell -- first good decision I've heard of in a while for the newspaper industry * Another pair of Tecmo Bo shoes from Nike -- this time as a Royal * This is an awesome post from a guy who looked through Google's street view and found particularly interesting photos * The Believer has an interview with Thom Yorke * So, what band is the most popular in the US? The Beatles, of course. * I know I'm late to this, but I'm excited to see District 9 * Originally Cartman had a dad -- the original South Park pilot (not the Spirit of Christmas) is up online * Comedy Central has cancelled Reno 911 * The Onion AV club interviews Ken Jeong, you know, the guy who played the gang boss in the Hangover and the king in Role Models and it seems something new each week * Alan Sepinwall interviews Don Draper Jon Hamm

the beatles aren't as important as everyone makes them out to be

"classic" rock stations rarely play their songs

user-pic

That Tyler Moeller situation is just a shame. I hope the idiot who sucker punched him gets what's coming to him.

user-pic

um, actually they are

user-pic

classic rock stations rarely do not suck

user-pic

Aren't classic rock stations playing Van Halen now? I'm not saying they are terrible, but in degree of importance, I think the Beatles are higher on the list.

user-pic

they are important in the minds of music aficionados, but their relevance outside that circle has been on the decline

im not here to hate on them, this is a matter of where they are now, not what they did in their time or what they influenced

user-pic

They may not get a ton of play, but I think any time Paul Mc Cartney does a show he can charge whatever amount of money he wants for tickets and the show sells out.

To be honest, I'm surprised it took Reno 911 this long to be cancelled. I know some people thought it was hilarious, but what a weird show, even by Comedy Central's standards.

user-pic

so, they're not as important to music as those who know about music and musicians say they are? i don't follow that logic

and if we went by "classic rock" stations, zep and ac/dc would be the most important bands of all time

oh, and the eagles suck ass

user-pic

the beatles used to be the end all/be all of rock n roll on both the critical and popular fronts. but today, they are not as relevant on the popular front, at least not in america. they are slowly going the same road jazz went down, becoming less and less relevant to the masses, while critics and hardcore music fans continue to hold them in high esteem.

if a new teen movie had a scene where a kid jumped on a parade float and sang twist and shout, more people would talk about the pop culture nod to ferris bueller than they would talk about the pop culture nod to the beatles.

admitting this does not make the band bad, its only admitting people have moved on, beethoven has rolled over

user-pic

um, the linked article is a poll that shows they're the most popular band in the us

next month when everything is re-released and the rock band game are out, you might realize how silly your statements are

user-pic

hey ctrent,

how well do you think beatles rock band will sell?
