Great reads

OK, this is a tough read, but an incredible read. CBS Sports' Gary Parrish writes an incredible story about a college coach who must go on after his ex-wife committed suicide and also killed their son. This is the kind of story you want to read, but don't want to read. It's tough to describe. I don't want to minimize what Tim Parmeter is going through, because it's impossible to imagine what he's feeling. However, I can imagine what Gary's going through. While not even in the same zip code or area code of what Parmeter is experiencing, the act of writing and reporting something like this is very difficult as well. Not only did he report this wonderfully, Gary wrote it nearly perfectly. Really, a great, great job by Gary. Prayers go out to Parmeter, but I also want to give kudos to Gary.
  • Wow, another great read here on Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin. Covering a college basketball team, I've always gotten closer to the assistants than the head coach. The assistants make the whole show run. They do the grunt work (along with the director of basketball operations and video coordinator and managers) and tend to know the ins and outs of the program. They're also hungry and willing teachers. I can't tell you how much I've learned from guys like Frank Martin, Andy Kennedy, Andy Assaley, Corrie Blount, James Holland, Jeff Dunlap and Stephen Miss, honestly, I've learned more basketball from those guys than I could ever imagine. Anyway, Frank's one of the good guys. And that piece gives you a nice view of why. It's a lot of stuff I never knew, because Frank's not a guy who will tell you the bad things, instead, he'll focus on the positives. He's really one of the good guys in the business. A great read.
  • Also, wanted to share this link -- dedication of Ken Griffey Sr. Field in Pennsylvania.Griffey Sr. is from Denora, Pa., and his son was born there. One of my favorite pieces of trivia is that Ken Griffey Jr. is probably the second-best left-handed outfielder born Nov. 21 in Denora, Pa. The best? Stan Musial. As for those who question the pick? Well, last year I had a question for Sr. -- I asked him who the best baseball player born in Denora was, and he said, "I think you've got to start with Stan Musial." Senior noted his father played on the same high school team as Musial. I asked about the best football player from there, and he asked "quarterback or position player? If it's quarterback, it's gotta be Joe Montana, but as a non-quarterback, it's me." Look at his stats, he was a heck of a receiver. A heck of an athlete, it's not tough to believe him. Pretty good alumni list for what is now Ringgold High School (Senior and Musial went to Denora High School before it was merged with another school to for Ringgold).

Speaking of Griffey Sr., I can't wait to start watching FSN rebroadcast of some of the classic Big Red machine games the next 9 Mondays. I was 2 years old in 1976 and I've only seen brief glimpses and highlights of those teams. Kudos to FSN for doing this. It is long overdue. I think they should take, say, the 12 best games from each season and rebroadcast one a week during the longest, coldest 3 months of the offseason.

    I'm just sayin...

Thanks for the links. Heartbreaking, to say the least, but yes, well worth reading.

Here's an idea. Maybe we should sign back Kyle Lohse. Just a thought...

    user-pic

But only at a reasonable price of course.

    user-pic

kyle lohse isn't signing anywhere for "a reasonable price"

    he's a boras guy

    user-pic

    Please, no Lohse...at any price.

Trent, I know this is off topic, but I've been dying to ask anyone who might have a little insight. What do you make of this whole Chad Johnson situation with the Bengals? I can't disagree that he's being a little bit of a crybaby about the situation, but personally I can't help but lend a little credibility to his claim that no one has his back. The incident with him and Palmer on the sideline happened in the 2nd or 3rd game of the season, yet that's still what everyone pointed at when looking for examples of "turmoil" the season. I can't say I blame him for feeling betrayed by the media with the article that Daugherty wrote, given how close Chad had let him. I have enjoyed Chad, but is there really so much going on behind the scenes that the locker room can't stand him? All his teammates seemed pretty happy when they were celebrating with him in the endzone the few times he scored late in the season. I think it's Marvin's job to step in, sit down with him, and convince him that the team DOES appreciate what he brings to the table. If Marvin isn't going to take to calling plays on offense or defense, shouldn't he at least be able to manage a few unique personalities? I think it'd be a huge mistake to let him go. Defenses would tee off on TJ if Chad weren't getting double coverage on 95% of the snaps throughout the season. What do you think? Anyone else is welcome to offer their input as well.

Thanks, Trent, for the great reads! Keep 'em coming!

Off this topic, but I was amazed that the Reds hired Jocketty! Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come. Everyone knows the Reds fans are tired of being teased, so let's hope this isn't another case of THAT!

Man, what a story about Tim Parmeter... Ya know, we hear about these kinds of things on the news all the time, but when the full story comes out like this and you start putting real people and real faces behind the headlines, it truly becomes real-life. If the story alone isn't enough to stir up tears, the picture of Tim and Ryan is absolutely heart wrenching. What a beautiful little kid, and what a horrible tragedy. I can only hope for the best for Parmeter and hope that everyone who reads this story will be moved by it. Thanks for the link, Trent.

Hey Trent, have you thought about putting any advertising on here, as long as it isn't that annoying stuff that turns your words into links, I would click on a few ads on that were in the columns if it would earn you a few bucks for your work here.

ridder, not really, because this is just a stopgap -- i expect news this week

    Trent,
Just saw a posting at mlbtraderumors.com that i thought you would be great for.
    "Help Wanted

I am looking to assemble a squad of capable writers who can step in on the occasional MLBTR post when I'm not available. I tried the "team representative" approach, and I've decided that's not the best way to do it. Instead I want to put together a crack team of 5-10 people who can blog about any rumor intelligently. Here's what I'm looking for:..............."

It is jsut an occasional fill in and no pay unless you work 8 hours but thought you would be great for it.

Story about Bruce for Bedard trade by Jonathon Mayo of MLB.com as posted on mlbtraderumors.com.
Question was would he trade Bruce for Bedard straight up:
"Mayo: In a word, no. I wouldn’t trade Bruce for Bedard straight up. Frankly, and maybe I’m a little prospect-slanted, there’s not much I would trade Jay Bruce for. Not only is the guy going to be one of the game’s great hitters, he’s an outstanding individual who’ll represent the organization extremely well. I know that’s not the be-all, end-all, but Bruce is going to be a true ambassador for the game. He’s going to hit for average, get on base, hit for a ton of power, play good OF (eventually RF, but fine in CF for now), throw runners out, maybe even steal a few bases. It’s hard to come up with a good comparable, but I’ll go with Larry Walker. Maybe not quite as much speed, but it’s pretty close......."

    Interesting outsiders view of Bruce.

    Hi Trent,

Just wanted to say that I think it's great that you're still blogging--simply because I get to keep reading your work. :)

Hopefully something'll come up shortly on the job front. After all, once someone appears on The Beat with Charlie St..er...Chuck Wilson, they're automatically supposed to be in the cadre of Outstanding Beat Reporters For Life!

Just a reminder for those of us in the Cinci area...FSN Ohio tonight at 8 is showing the first episode in the classic Cincinnati Reds games. It's the 1985 game against San Deigo where Pete got hit 4192.

    Trent .. according to:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080114&content_id=2345442&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp

O's are interested in trading Bedard to M's for a very good minor league starter and a reliever. What if we offered them Burton and Bailey?
Do you think they'd go for it?

    user-pic

maus, i believe they're talking about those two in addition to adam jones

    user-pic

Larry Walker type (Bruce) for Bedard straight up??! I would do that in a minute. As I've said before great pitching is harder to obtain than great hitting (see the last few off season for proof). We can always trade Bedard in summer of 09 if he doesn't put us over the hump, but I think he would -- easily!

Thanks for the clarification Trent. I was getting excited because I thought the price was coming down.

BTW -- just found your site (after reading your Post blog religiously). Looks like you are just as active here! A link to your site no exist on my Links toolbar so I can get to it on a regular basis. Thanks for all the info!

Just heard and saw that the Reds are in Goodyear Arizona looking at training facilities. Sounds like they may use site with Cleveland if they sign on.

Saw on Marc' blog that the Rays are looking for a super utility player. Any chance they may have someone that we might need for say Freel or maybe some package deal. Just wondering?

Trent here's hoping you get good news this week bud. I'm pulling for you. I've recruited Amy to help me with the blogging on my site. Trent I don't know how you do it. I've been so busy with my girls lately I haven't had time to mess with it much at all.

    user-pic

First, thrilled you set this blog up after you left the Post...enjoy your Reds coverage immensely...

Thanks for the link on Frank Martin...I've known Frank for a decade (I'm a HS basketball coach in Florida as well) and he's a really great guy...he IS deserving of this chance and opportunity...

    Continued best...
